Choosing the Perfect Location for Your New York Boudoir Shoot

 I remember the first time I decided to do a boudoir shoot. It was a mix of excitement and nerves, something I wanted to do to celebrate myself, boost my confidence, and capture a part of me that often went unseen. Living in New York, I had a world of options at my fingertips, but figuring out where exactly to have my shoot felt like a monumental task. Should it be in a luxurious hotel, a chic studio, or perhaps something more intimate and personal like my own apartment? It turns out, choosing the perfect location for your New York boudoir shoot can set the tone for your entire experience. In this article, I’ll share how I navigated the process, what I learned along the way, and offer some tips to help you make the right choice for your own boudoir experience.



Understanding Your Vision: The First Step

When it came to my shoot, the first thing I had to get clear on was my vision. What did I want from this boudoir session? Boudoir photography can range from soft and romantic to bold and edgy, and I needed a location that would complement the look and feel I was going for. One of the most popular choices is The Plaza, with its timeless elegance and stunning suites that evoke an old-world charm. The modern but equally stunning options like The Standard or The NoMad also made my shortlist. These locations offer breathtaking views of the city skyline, which adds an extra layer of sophistication to your photos.

After a lot of contemplation, I opted for the The Ludlow Hotel. Its aesthetic was a perfect blend of urban chic and coziness, with large windows that let in an abundance of light, which was crucial for achieving the soft, ethereal look I wanted.

Option 2: Studio Sessions – A Blank Canvas

For some, a boudoir shoot in a professional photography studio might be the best option. Studios offer a controlled environment where photographers can play with lighting and backdrops to get exactly the right look. When I considered this option, I realized that a studio could provide more flexibility in terms of styling. With multiple set-ups, props, and backdrops to choose from, the photographer and I could create a variety of looks without worrying about unpredictable elements like hotel staff or noisy neighbors.



There are countless studios in New York specifically designed for boudoir photography. Dumbo Loft Studios in Brooklyn was one that caught my attention due to its industrial-chic vibe with exposed brick, big windows, and wooden floors. It had all the elements for a moody, editorial-style shoot. Another standout was Milk Studios, offering high-end luxury with its sleek white walls and customizable spaces, giving the photographer creative freedom.

Ultimately, though, I decided against a studio session for my first shoot. I wanted something that felt a little more organic and less posed, and I felt a studio environment might make me feel too staged or unnatural.

Option 3: Airbnb or Private Residences – A Home Away from Home

I briefly considered doing my boudoir session in my own apartment, but I felt too attached to it to see it as a place for such a personal experience. That’s when I realized that renting a private residence via Airbnb or another short-term rental service might strike the perfect balance between homey comfort and luxury.

In New York, there are countless properties available that offer the intimacy and privacy of a personal space, with the added bonus of unique architecture and design elements. I found a gorgeous loft in SoHo, complete with high ceilings, exposed beams, and oversized windows. It had a warmth and character that resonated with me and made me feel instantly at ease.

The beauty of choosing a private residence is the personal connection you can create with the space. For me, it was important that I felt relaxed and "myself" in the environment, which I achieved in a private setting. Another perk? You can book for several hours without interruptions or the time constraints that might come with a studio or hotel room.

Option 4: Outdoor Boudoir – Bold and Adventurous

For those who feel particularly daring, New York has no shortage of scenic outdoor spaces that could make for an unforgettable boudoir shoot. Imagine standing amidst the natural beauty of Central Park, the urban jungle feel of the High Line, or even against the iconic backdrop of Brooklyn Bridge Park.

While outdoor boudoir wasn’t for me this time around, it’s a fantastic option for those who want something truly unique. That said, outdoor sessions come with logistical considerations, such as the time of day (for optimal lighting and privacy), weather, and permits if shooting in a public space. New York City’s ever-changing weather can be a challenge, but with the right planning, the results can be absolutely stunning.

Final Thoughts: My Personal Choice

In the end, I went with a boutique hotel suite at The Ludlow. It felt like the perfect combination of luxury and coziness. I had the privacy I needed, and the chic decor added a bit of glam without overwhelming the sense of intimacy I was going for. The session was everything I hoped it would be. The large windows bathed the room in soft, natural light, and the photographer was able to capture me in moments that felt authentic and beautiful.
